Your Brain Has a GPS

If you were to look around the room you’re in right now for the color blue, you would probably find a lot of it. Then, if you close your mind, you’d be able to picture it. But you probably didn't see was a lot of red, because you find what you’re looking for.

This is a common experiment done by the famous life coach Tony Robbins, to show that what you believe about life, you look for in the world and you find it. There is no shortage of options in what you’re looking for. If you want division and anger, you’ll find it. If you want positivity and unity, you’ll find it. If you want the color blue, you'll probably find that, too.

Even though I think we all inherently believe this to be true, we don’t often act like it. We act like we only have partial control. There’s so much busyness in our lives, political news going on, or external circumstances that it feels like too much to say, “you find what you look for.” The truth is that both things can be true. You can have events outside of your control and still look for positivity. You can have turmoil in your country and still search for gratitude. The choice is ultimately up to us.

The other option is to give up and let the world take over. We’ll just take what we can get and get by. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather try to find the positive. Even in the most devastating moments in our lives, we find something meaningful and learn from it, even if we might not use the word positive. The key is not that you’re smiling every hour; the key is which direction your brain’s GPS is going. Keep it loading positively, because if you look for it, you’ll find it.
