Building an Expert Foundation

It is foolish to think that we can build a successful life all on our own. Even if we reject the idea that God could have a part in our path in life, there is still the element of other people that inevitably got us where we are in life. But I think there’s a reason why people appeal to a higher power in highs and lows, whether it’s winning an Olympic gold or experiencing medical sicknesses. There’s a beautiful serenity in comprehending the presence of someone behind our lives.

In 1 Corinthians, Paul shares the following regarding the foundation that God provides us: “By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light.”

Jesus Christ is the foundation behind our lives, and if we try to build on anything else, it will eventually crumble and fall. We’ve all been guilty of putting other things first in our lives. Our default is to care more about our job, family, friends, or what we’re doing next weekend – and we should care about those things. The distinction is that our deepest cares must fall in the hands of Jesus, who gave himself for us so we could have a new life. Through Jesus, we have a foundation laid that we can stand boldly and confidently on. We have eternal life, the greatest gift in the world.
