Sometimes we’re quick in Christian culture to suppress our wins. There’s pressure to perform false humility for fear of coming across as arrogant, and while pride should be avoided, righteousness shouldn’t. Take this passage from one of David’s psalms, for example:
“Though you probe my heart and examine me at night, though you test me, you will find nothing; I have resolved that my mouth will not sin.
As for the deeds of men – by the word of your lips I have kept myself from the ways of the violent. My steps have held to your paths; my feet have not slipped. I call on you, O God, for you will answer me; give ear to me and hear my prayer.*”
What stuck out to me in these verses is the confidence in which David speaks. There’s no apology for appearing too prideful – instead, he humbly and accurately describes his actions. I find that comforting. Why not clearly express what is true when it pertains to our righteousness?
We should be proud of our walk with God, especially when it comes to straying from evil and faithfully following God. It’s not a call to perfection, it’s a call to stay firm on the path. For when we do fall short, God will pick us up, forgive us, and send us back in the right direction. Our righteousness is a gift of grace, and that is worth celebrating!
No matter your past or present, you have had wins. You’ve had strong moments, righteous actions, and spiritual growth. Wherever you are on the path to sanctification, have confidence in your steps.
