Stop Being So Practical

At some point in our lives, we have all done something because it was the most practical thing to do. We think small because we want to do what is most simple and useful. A lot of times – maybe even most of the time - this is the right thing to do. But unfortunately, many of us don't follow our personal goals because we resort to what is most practical.

Don't let what is practical lead the way before what is most purposeful to you. There are ways to make what is purposeful to you practical, but that is not the number one priority. I heard a quote at a conference once that said, "if the want to is strong enough, the how-to will come." This doesn't mean that you should go scrap your plans, use all your money, or do something else radical. It's helpful to have a plan, a financial path, and practical action steps. Just know that none of us, including those we consider most successful in life, ever have it all figured out. But if you do have a clear vision of the direction you're going, you'll find ways to make it practical.

What is a choice that you have made or might make simply because it is practical? What is an area in your life that you feel you might have settled? We have all done it at some point. But once you're self-aware enough to realize what is holding you back, you can take action to fix it. When you take the time to consider your decisions, you know a purposeful choice from one you made to avoid an unrealistic option. I’m not the person to say whether your personal goals are realistic or not, but I do know that we all have made a decision in life that we regret. It can be about a romantic relationship, a job, a friendship, or a personal aspiration. Hopefully you’re thinking about it now. If you know the goal you truly want, what’s stopping you from getting there? What can you do today that can lead you a little bit closer tomorrow?

Don’t fret over wasted time or bad decisions. Learn from them and know that in many ways, it has probably served you to where you are now or where you’re going later. Once we accept our past, we can move forward to do what is most purposeful to us in the future. We can stop being practical and do what we were made for.
