The Secret to Consistency

Sometimes consistency can be misleading. We can all trust the consistent actions we want to do and reward them for helping us get to where we want to go, but some of us are inconsistently consistent. No, I’m not trying to make this a complicated word battle. I heard this from a business owner, Nick Bare, who mentioned that we can all be consistent for short bursts of time. We can train hard for a race for two weeks, get up early for five days, or stick with a work goal for only one month’s time. But this is consistency in bursts, not longevity. What does it take to be consistently consistent?

We must first avoid the dangers of using short bursts of motivation to guide us. Motivation is both more useful and more dangerous than you think. It’s amazing to leverage your inspiration toward action, but it cannot help you complete every action. Motivation is almost like coffee for some people – it gives you energy to start the day, but it doesn’t give you enough to finish it. Instead, we must rely on something much more powerful: discipline.

Discipline is the daily power that makes us grow. With a heartfelt vision and a disciplined mind, you can accomplish much more than you realize. And, you can accomplish it consistently over time. Discipline is that slap on the wrist to keep you going when you feel like giving up. It’s that fire in your belly that reminds you of who you want to be. Discipline brings the small wins that lead to the biggest successes. When you rely on exercising self-discipline and leveraging motivation, you are able to be consistently consistent.

If you’re not feeling motivated today, remember that there are many others feeling the same way. Know that they are doing their best to exercise discipline to follow their life’s path, and you can too. Remember who you're trying to be, and let that you fuel you into tomorrow. You have far more potential than you give yourself credit for, so why not make the most of it?
