We Need God

Most people have felt a sense of loneliness before, even if they have friends around them. It’s a part of human nature to feel alone, to go through a period of time where they need something greater to lift them out of their mire. It’s why we see so many people appeal to God when their life’s circumstances turn sour. Those moments flash a light on their need for God, not because they needed him more then, but because it became clear to them that the need was there in the first place.

This is why Jesus shared this to the Pharisees in the gospel of Matthew: “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick…For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” When our life feels like it’s upside down, we ask for God’s help the most. But the reality is that the picture Jesus painted to those Pharisees years ago still remains true today: it is those who admit their sins who find God. Without admitting our weakness, we are left wondering why there needs to be a God.

I believe everyone will come to this conclusion, whether now or after life ends. We are frankly too broken to think we have it all together. For those that believe in this now, it remains a great hope in our lives. It becomes an anchor for what we can trust in this world because our trust lies in something greater than us. As Psalm 73 beautifully says:

“Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

When we come to the conclusion that we desperately need God, we secure a hope in God that is eternally beautiful. Don’t ever lose hope, because God is there for you, and he is there for all who recognize their need and call on him. He is the strength of our hearts and our portion forever.
